A Creative Solution To Beating Caribbean Air Duty
The Caribbean economy is currently under threat by a rise in the UK's Air Passenger Duty. The British Government reclassified economy class travel to the Caribbean, resulting in a 50% rate hike. Flying in the face of all reason, an 8 hour trip to Barbados now costs significantly more (in duties) than a 12 hour flight to Los Angeles. So how to beat the rates? You could row there. It only takes Thirty One days now.
The successful attempt was achieved by a five person Durham University crew, who went the scenic route to Holidays in Barbados in the days between January 6th and February 7th. They rowed from Tenerife , travelling 3,000 miles in 31 days, 23 hours and 31 minutes. The previous record was set in January 2008, when the journey took over a day longer to complete: 33 days, seven hours and 30 minutes to be precise. The team managed the feat by rowing twenty four hours a day in shifts of three, with a maximum of two hours rest at any one time. Even with optimal sleeping time, precious little comfort would have been on offer. Barely as wide as a bathtub, the 40 foot multihull boat was incredibly cramped.
And if you were serious about taking this unconventional means of transport to get to your Holidays in Jamaica, you'd find it hard not to be put off by the various wear and tear that these intrepid rowers experienced. The rowers found themselves blistering up terrible, and they even began to reshape their seats to alleviate some of the pain. With the heat gradually becoming more tropical, the crew found themselves stripping off to air their sores. This wasn't especially fun for the one female crew member either. 'I've seen enough male dangly bits over the last month to last me a lifetime'. Presumably then, 'enough' is 'four'. I'm personally of the opinion that if getting to the Tropical Sky of the Caribbean is really going to cause me that much pain but boat, I'd be content with the rate hike.
