What Is A Muay Thai Bag and Who Uses One?
Muay Thai is from Indochina and it is a popular form of martial arts. It has become quite the popular sport in Thailand and other South Pacific areas. Today, modern Muay Thai is typically a ring sport where gloves that are similar to boxing gloves are used. Muay Thai is a common part of mixed martial arts training as well and many MMA trainers now use Muay Thai bags in their facilities.
The main idea behind Muay Thai is that you have eight different body spots that you can use to attack an opponent. The hands and feet make up four and the other four are made up by savage attacks from the elbow and knee.
Because of the unique types of attacks, training equipment for Muay Thai has to be specialized. This is where the Muay Thai bag comes in; it is a heavy hanging bag that is designed to meet the needs of all Muay Thai practicers.
Unlike a boxing bag, the Muay thai bag is much longer and thinner. To accommodate for high and low punches and kicks, the bag averages between five and six feet in length. It is designed to be about the same diameter as a person, to practice the holds used prior to the particular savage knee strikes that Muay Thai is known for.
As for weight, it has similar weight ranges like most heavy boxing bags. With an average weight of at least eighty five pounds, these bags are designed to accommodate most fighters and the variety of blows.
One difference between a Muay Thai bag and boxing bag is the filling; the bags are shipped to homes and gyms empty. This allows an experienced Muay Thai trainer to customize the filling of the bag the way the feel should be optimal.
As hanging bags, Muay Thai bags are subject to more force and they need to be able to withstand that force. It is because of this force that many Muay Thai trainers use different fillers. Typically, most experienced trainers will fill the bag’s bottom with sand; the sand is dense and keeps the bag from moving too much.
After the sand, the rent of the bag can be filled with rice, flour, or cloth rags. Each has a different benefit and reason or being included in the bag. Flour is nice because it does have a similar feel to sand; rag cloths easily absorb hits, and rice is a good in-between.
Muay Thai is an exciting sport that combines blows like no other on the planet. Since there are benefits to utilizing special training and equipment, it is no wonder why these Muay Thai heavy bags are found in the homes and training centers of martial arts participants all around the globe.
