Answer:
two reasons: money and health.
Money: professional boxers are paid to put their body's and health on the line. amateurs wear the protection because its something you should wear. PERMANENT DAMAGE doesnt have to be a part of boxing...look at good ol' Ali. boxing takes a toll on the pros, but thats what they get paid for.
Health: There's more of a possibility of having a HUGE difference in skill/ability amongst amateurs than with pros. With this in mind, it is more important to prevent a complete beat-down in an amateur match.
