Hand to Hand Combat Beats Combat Sports
In terms of self defense, you should be extremely careful about what martial arts style you choose. Most forms will only make you an athlete and basically as ineffective at street fighting as being a basketball player would. Hand to Hand Combat styles are what you should look at if self defense, rather than competition, is your goal.
Hand to Hand Combat is a generic word for a collection of fighting styles that are effective from a military point of view. They may not be as pretty and flashy as some of the competition oriented martial arts. You may not be able to break as many boards while using them or snap your kicks as high. You will, however, be more likely to break choke holds and snap the elbows of your attacker.
When it comes down to it, the most effective forms for a street fight are the ones chosen by national military groups for their hand to hand training. It only makes sense, as these are chosen for survival in real combat rather than winning medals. When it comes to dealing with aggression on the street, it’s every bit as real as a combat situation. It’s survival, not competition.
Hand to Hand Combat is called by various names, from Close Combat to MOUT or MOOTW, depending on who you ask. For the unarmed variety, it can also be called “combatives.” Whether you’re talking about Krav Maga or Jiujitsu or Sambo, they’re all geared toward real combat, and real combat isn’t about how you flourish your kicks or how many boards you can break.
Real combat is ugly and brutal, and street fighting is no different. Your assailant is your enemy, and you can bet that he or she is not going to attack you by competition rules. You shouldn’t respond by competition rules either. No one is going to give you a medal or hold up a score card for your street fighting prowess. Your reward will be survival and keeping what they try to take from you.
