Obama Wall Street Address Calls For Cooperation And Change
While the financial reform bill is going through Congress, the Obama Wall Street address went on and the President called for change and cooperation. He admonished Wall Street to not have cush a cavalier and insular attitude towards the economy, and he wanted the Volcker Rule put into action. A lot of people have been sent running for a money lender or to the unemployment line because of financial mismanagement.
Reform called for by Obama Wall Street address
Press and Wall Street heavies attended the Obama Wall Street address and a transcript is available on Reuters . He called for common sense reforms and to curb the influence of lobbyists on regulatory bodies. Wall Street was raked over the coals. He mentioned the need for greater protections against too big to fail banks, consumer protection, and transparency as well as control for shareholders.
The Volcker Rule
Part of the financial reform bill is the institution of the Volcker Rule. The rule is named for Paul Volcker, former Federal Reserve Chairman, and it prohibits banks from certain trades or actions not on the behest of its shareholders. Some say the rule would restrict commerce, but the President fired back that "unless your business model depends on bilking people there is little to fear from these rules." (As reported in USA Today ).
Deriding and upholding bailouts
Included in the Obama Wall Street speech was a defense and denunciation of the bailouts. The President maintained that bailouts were made because the risk of not doing so would be greater than doing nothing. He also said "the American people should never have been put in that position in the first place." He flatly denied the idea that further bailouts have the door open. The President doesn't want Wall Street to get another cash advance from the taxpayers.
Financial reform bill passed the House
Many of the reforms discussed in the Obama Wall Street speech are in the financial reform bill which just passed the House, and a Senate bill is due soon. Some Wall Street impresarios and Republicans have opposed it, and many believe it won't deliver the necessary reforms.
