Wall Mounted Fountains can be Self Installed
While installing a wall mounted fountain takes more patience and know-how than hanging a painting, it can be done without too much hassle as long as you have an extra person on hand to help you complete the job. For heady-duty wall fountains, some opt to hire on a contractor, but if you have a few basic carpentry skills, even these type of fountains can be done without spending the extra money on a professional.
Before deciding where you plan to hang your fountain, remember that you'll need to install it near an outlet, preferably a GFI outlet. These ground fault interrupter outlets will add extra protection to both the fountain itself and to those handling the fountain. Also keep in mind that, in order to hide cords, make sure that the outlet is behind the centerpiece, but also accessible. For easier access, you can have an extra wall switch installed so that you can easily turn the fountain on or off as needed. Physically pulling the plug from the wall each time can be a hassle especially when it's hidden behind the piece itself.
Of course, most of us aren't so fortunate to have our outlets already in place exactly where we need them. Creating such outlets adds an extra expense as a professional electrician will be needed. Electrical work is not something to attempt unless you have quite a bit of experience. To avoid the extra cost of an electrician, there are other options for hiding the electrical cords. Consider adding a plant by your fountain. Not only will this hide the wires, but will add to the décor of your fountain area.
Wall fountains can be hung from just about any sturdy wall, although, if the piece is heavy, you will need to locate wall studs. Flimsier walls made of plaster or the like aren't sturdy enough to hang wall mounted fountains. In this case, a stud will most definitely have to be used.
There are many online instructions on how to hang a wall mounted fountain. However, it is best to carefully follow the guidelines listed in the instruction booklet that should come with your piece. Each fountain is unique and may include tips and instructions specifically geared towards your fountain. As long as you have the right tools on hand, an assistant, and you follow instructions carefully, you should be able to install your fountain successfully.
