The History of a Kettlebell
The history of a kettlebell is unclear but two main theories exist. The first theory discusses the kettlebells used as a cooking pot over open campfires. This ‘kettle' had a handle to remove from the fire when necessary. Someone along the way added heavy stones to the kettle and began tossing it around. This led to a sport in the early Olympic Games.
The second theory is a more recent theory of kettlebells as they were used by Russian merchants in the marketplace. A kettlebell weighed a certain amount and was used by merchants as counterweights as a tool to measure other goods.
Russians soon began using these handy tools as a sporting event and started to toss them around. Soon these events led to organised community activities at festivals and other similar events. Competitions were held demonstrating which contestant had the most strength and endurance.
The kettlebell caught on as a weightlifting device when weightlifting became popular in World War II. Weightlifting resulted in many individuals earning titles and recognition that the farmers and villagers participating in kettlebells events soon became interested in using the kettlebell as a weight.
For the next several decades, many Russians in the USSR continued to practice the competition of kettlebells. This competition identified a winner as the person who could lift the heaviest kettlebell the most times. The problem in these decades was that there was no uniformity to the rules and regulations of the game. Each city or village held their competition based on their rules which were often different from city to city.
Finally, in 1985 a formal kettlebell organisation was established. This committed established norms and regulations across the sport. Weight categories were set up along with a set of national rules. The first National Competition of the USSR was held in Lipetsk, Russia in November of 1985.
The west did not learn of kettlebells and their many functions until around the year 2000. The kettlebell has taken the US by storm since then with many celebrities and reality television shows using exercise workout programs which involve a kettlebell. However, today kettlebells are used as a daily workout regime to increase endurance and strength whilst providing a cardio workout.
The history of a kettlebell has come a long way from a mere cooking tool used over campfires to an item which helps people become physically fit. The kettlebell provides an overall well rounded workout.
