Protective Gear

All Chainsaws Require Protective Gear
Chainsaws are relatively benign when the motor isn't running. Once that blade starts spinning, however, danger can come at you from any direction. There is plenty of safety gear available to counter most of the dangers you face. There is a type of gear for every part of your body, not matter what brand of chainsaw you have or how big your blade. Safety gear is a very important part of running a chainsaw.
There are several ways to get hurt when you are felling trees. The tree itself can hit you as it falls or branches might spring loose at any moment as the tree settles. The saw itself is so loud that it can threaten your hearing. Always use a black helmet with appropriate hearing protection.
When you are on the ground and someone else is up in the tree, the value of the helmet increases. Branches, tools or other equipment can suddenly drop out of the tree, causing serious injury or maybe death. With the proper helmet on, though, the impact is spread out, leaving you with only a headache rather than permanent brain damage.
Say you own an Echo chainsaw. You might feel that you have to use Echo safety equipment. Well, you can, but you don't have too. Any equipment from any manufacturer will work just as well with any saw on the market. Just because your saw says Stihl on it doesn't mean your safety equipment has to.
With your head and ears safe, we turn to the eyes. Some chainsaw operators will use full safety goggles; others rely on a face mask. The mask attaches to the helmet like a visor, blocking flying wood chips from getting to your face. If your chainsaw is spitting sawdust, you need to sharpen your blade. The large lattice allows full visibility while blocking the detritus flying off the blade.
Last we have chaps and boots. The chaps or trousers are made out of special material that resists the cutting chain, offering some protection. Any good steel-toed boot will work to protect your feet.
I doesn't make a difference what type of saw you prefer. You can use a McCulloch chainsaw with protective gear from Stihl. They will work just fine together and provide you with the same level of safety. Many areas actually require you to use the proper safety gear. Check with the authorities in your area and always obey the law!
