MMA Sprawling - How to Improve Your Takedown Defense for MMA
Sprawling is an important part of mixed martial arts. If you're good at defending the takedown, then you'll be able to dictate where the fight takes place. If you want to go to the ground, then you can, but you can also keep it standing if you want to. Proper sprawling technique, therefore, is important if you want to be able to accomplish this. There are a lot of ways to improve your takedown defense, be it increasing your strength or just your technique. I'll go over both ways here.
The most important thing to consider when approaching wrestling in MMA is that core strength is king. If you don't have core strength, then you're not going to be able to defend anyone's takedown. I want to make a very clear distinction here: core strength mainly refers to the power of your hips, not your overall strength. How much you bench press doesn't matter in the least. Having a strong and stable core is important because it keeps you balanced and it lets you control your center of gravity. You'll be able to extend your body, but still keep it rigid and powerful so your opponent can't take you down.
There are a lot of exercises that you can use to build core strength, but the best ones are the squat and deadlift. Both of these will increase the strength of your legs, spinal erectors, and abdominals. All of these muscles are important for sprawling and will help ensure that you're successful in defending the inevitable takedown in every MMA fight.
While strength and conditioning is king, technique is queen. You need both of them to really master sprawling and to be effective at it in MMA. The most important thing you'll need to figure out at the subtle nuances people make when they're going for a takedown. If you can see it coming, then it should be pretty easy to defend. Just make sure you widen your base and lower your center of gravity, but try to keep it ontop of or level with your opponent's.
I really can't stress how important timing is in shrugging off the takedowns. Aside from that, widening your base is important. You should keep your legs far apart when sprawling. This'll make it difficult for your opponent to grab ahold of you, which'll help make it more difficult for him to wake you down. It's also a good idea to try to throw your opponent off of you when they go for a takedown--if you just sprawl, there's a good chance they'll continue going for it, in which case they might get it.
