Treadmills For Home Fitness Fans - 7 Tips for Buying the Best Treadmill For Your Money
You're about to discover simple things you can do when looking at treadmills for home or office or any other place that's not a gym that are will help you get the best treadmill for your money.
Everybody knows everything about a treadmill, till it's time to buy one. Then, they come across claims that you can't verify, confusing information. Because everyone who's got a treadmill to sell claims that they have the best treadmill. It's got this, it's got that, buy, buy, buy, don't think, buy. Read my 7 tips and you'll definitely get the best treadmill for your money.
Here are some facts about treadmills to help you compare apples to apples and buy the best treadmill for real.
Treadmill Components
The best treadmill, the worst treadmill, and all the treadmills in-between, they all have a deck, belt, rollers, motor, flywheel, frame, display console, electronics. Some treadmill makers make one or more of these components better than others. Here's what to look for.
Treadmill Deck
A treadmill deck is there to provide support for the running surface and shock reduction for the user. The heavier you are, the more shock reduction the deck should have. The faster you go, the more shock reduction it should have.
The better decks are made, usually, of thin laminated wood layers and coated with lubricants so there's less friction between the deck and tread belt. Also, they're reversible. That means you can turn them over (which, in theory, means you get twice the life or it's like having a deck after you ruined one. In practice it probably doesn't work like that every time.)
1st tip: You want a treadmill deck that gives a little but does not bounce.
Treadmill Tread Belt
Most treadmill tread belts (the surface you run on) are 2 ply and about the same thickness, between 14-24 inches wide and 45-63 inches long. Some manufacturers (Sole, for instance) have thicker, more shock absorbent decks (at least on the more expensive models).
2nd tip: The size of the tread belt is what allows you to run, jog, sprint comfortably (no hitting the machine, no tripping). Small and narrow is good only for walking. The taller you are, the bigger it has to be. I'm 5' 6" and don't like anything under 18 'x 56" and I run, sometimes very fast.
Treadmill Rollers
Treadmill rollers support the tread belt. Good ones reduce the amount of wear and tear on the motor and tread belt.
3rd tip: Big and heavy is better than small and light. They last longer and protect better.
Treadmill Motor
Usually a treadmill's motor is between 1.5 and 3.0 horsepower. Obviously, the more horsepower, the stronger the engine. But always consider treadmill horsepower in relation to the belt and deck. Sometimes, you get badly designed ones, so they need more horsepower. In an ideal world, the belt and deck would be the same, so you can really compare motors.
4th tip: Buy a treadmill with a minimum of 2.0 horsepower (some 1.5 horsepower can, occasionally, be enough. But better have more than you need than less.) The reason for that? Smaller motors tend to break down more often (overheating, motor stress). And when it comes to peak duty or continuous rating, be weary of the peak duty rating even though some argue that manufacturers tend to use them interchangeably. What if you buy from the one who really means 'peak duty?'
Treadmill Flywheel
Your treadmill's flywheel controls the speed and consistency of the belt. In other words, it's what keeps you moving at 5.5 miles/hour for every second that 5.5 miles/hour is the selected speed. The cheap flywheels aren't good at that, so you get jerky motion.
Typically, you find the better flywheels in treadmills that run you $1,000 or more.
5th tip: A good flywheel helps your treadmill last longer (jerky motion being bad for motors and electronics, and some other parts).
Treadmill Frame
Treadmill frames come in steel or aluminum. Aluminum frame treadmills will run you more. People argue that aluminum frames are better because they're stronger, support more weight, don't rust.
The fact is: some types of aluminum are stronger than some types of steel. Or, put the other way, some types of steel are stronger than some types of aluminum.
Another fact: a properly coated steel frame will not rust.
The more important thing to take into account is how the frame is put together. Make sure the frame is welded. Frames put together with bolts don't last as long.
6th tip: An aluminum frame that supports 500 lbs at the most is just as strong as a steel frame that supports 500 lbs at the most. In other words, don't worry about steel vs aluminum, worry about how much weight the frame can bear. And buy one that can bear more than you weigh.
Treadmill Electronics and Treadmill Display Console
Display consoles vary a lot from manufacturer to manufacturer. What makes for a good console depends a lot on you. Do you get bored easily with your workouts? Then a treadmill console that lets you change between 11 workout programs is better than one with 4, for instance.
7th tip: Take the display console into account last (this is the icing on the cake, not the cake). Because some manufacturers are so good at making good-looking ones you may forget to take into account some of the other components. Decide on a few treadmills where you like all the other features/components. Then decide which of these has the display console you like the most.
