The Schwinn Airdyne Evo Comp -- Why Evolution?
The schwinn Airdyne Evolution Comp is a logical progression from the traditional Airdyne and for good reasons. It's hard to improve upon the regular Airdyne and that's what Schwinn attempted with the Evo Comp. Let's face it, that's why it still sells well after almost twenty years of selling the almost unchanged stationary bike. It still has loyal fans even though it lacks many features of more modern bikes. There are at least two areas where there is room for change though. Hence the evolution and some changes...
You get fan noise with a fan resistance machine. It's the nature of the machine. Go faster and you get more fan noise. The fan resistance is what produces the load that you work against to produce the Airdyne workout. Great music of any sort is not of much use on the fan resistance bikes. Two methods are used to reduce the racket. There's a smaller fan for one. You still get the fan resistance but the noise level is reduced. It's still wind noise, just not as much and not so close to the rider. It's also true that a smaller area of air is getting disturbed. It isn't quite so much like a cyclone. You cut the gale force winds somewhat but still get the resistance required for the workout plus the cooling breeze. The big fan on my Airdyne is almost too much of a good thing.
The smaller fan also makes the machine a bit less bulky. That way it's easier to store and takes a little less room when you use it, plus it's a bit easier to move as well.
The Evolution Comp uses a different drive mechanism as an attempt at an improvement. The older bikes have a fairly standard bike-type chain drive which comes with typical bike chain messes and wear and tear as well. Works great, but it's not quiet. There's almost as much mechanical noise as there is wind noise and it could be annoying depending on your perception of such racket.
The belt drive is a complete replacement for the chain. It's smoother as well as quieter. The whole pedaling action is smoother because of the belt replacing the chain. It's also less messy and still should last for a very long time.
The Schwinn Airdyne bike is hard to improve. The Schwinn Airdyne Evolution Comp exercise bike version is an attempt to build a quieter and less windy machine that still works just like the old classic. The old version was not eliminated though since it still works just as well as it has for decades. It's a plus that so many of the Air-Dyne bikes have been sold that there are lots of reviews available where owners tell it all.
